Road Scholar is the name for the programs developed and offered by Elderhostel, Inc., the not-for-profit world leader in lifelong learning since 1975.  Our mission is to empower adults to explore the world's places, peoples, cultures and ideas, and in doing so to discover more about themselves. A fellowship of learning and the joy of discovery are the hallmarks of the Road Scholar experience.

The University of Montana Western, established in 1893 as Montana's Normal School, has been a proud provider of Elderhostel-Road Scholar programs since 1978.  For the first decade or so, participants were housed and attended classes on campus in Dillon. Later, we branched out and began offering programs in nearby communities and Yellowstone National Park, housing not only Dillon participants - but all attendees - in commercial lodgings. 2008 brought us the opportunity to begin hosting the Targhee Institute's *a permittee of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest Elderhostel programs in Teton National Park, Idaho & Wyoming. In 2010, all of our programs became "Road Scholar" programs, to connote the learning journey.
