CHANCELLOR’S GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR 2008-2009

Below I outline my goals and objectives for my next year as chancellor of Montana Western. Most goals are ongoing.
GOAL 1: Review, update and continue use of the strategic plan.
· Underscore the importance and effective use of strategic planning and decision making.
· With the strategic planning committee, review and update the current plan as needed.
· Identify two to four initiatives for focus over the next two years.
· Track achievement and assess accomplishments.
· Work with the appropriate senior administrators who are responsible for oversight of various goal and objectives.
· Charge the academic administration with the responsibility to pursue 2 to 4 initiatives.
GOAL 2: Place high priority and focused effort on successful accreditation reviews.
· Support and encourage efforts with NCATE and other specific program associations.
· Support and encourage efforts with NWCC.
GOAL 3: Enhance resources to help achieve goals.
· Continue to fully support the Foundation’s capital campaign for Montana Western
· Require senior staff to explore outside funding.
· Continue to support and emphasize our branding and marketing communication initiatives.
· Explore development our image-enhancement goals.
· Redouble efforts to increase enrollment—recruiting, retention and fundraising--by reestablishing an enrollment management team/task force per the strategic plan.
· Acquire funds to remodel Main Hall and the theaters.
· Pursue all-campus compensation goals.
GOAL 4: Ensure the continued success of Experience One.
· Implement appropriate action steps from the strategic plan.
· As appropriate , use NSSE and FSSE data to improve X-1 and experiential teaching and learning.
· Ask all involved to think creatively, both in detail and broadly, to enhance experiential teaching and learning under the plan. .
· Constantly support faculty and department goals in the classroom.
· Explore external funding for continued implementation, revision and analysis of Experience One and in support of experiential learning.
· Take advantage of Experience One for travel abroad and international study.
· Require ongoing, valid assessment of the block plan program and teaching and learning.
· Work to involve the campus in “getting the word out” on X-1.
Goal 5: Foster good public relations for the campus and system.
· Attend as many campus meetings and Dillon area community events as possible.
· Continue to be visible on campus and in the region.
· Meet again with all departments and offices to discuss their challenges and concerns.
· Host events on campus and at the Chancellor’s house for faculty, staff and community members.
· Hold open office hours on campus.
· Set again, effective communication as an overall goal for senior staff and chancellor’s council.
· Constantly remind colleagues and the community of our mission to educate students.
· Continue to write the regular newsletters for local media.
GOAL 6: Lead Montana Western to greater academic excellence and prominence.
· Challenge the university community to achieve excellence in all departments and programs.
· Meet with small groups of mixed faculty for open, free-flowing discussions of the academic program, the vision for the campus and other topics.
· Foster an enhanced intellectual atmosphere on campus.
· Continue to help examine and assess existing and proposed programs for quality, vitality and sustainability.
· Work with faculty and staff to continue to improve graduation rates.
· Identify and implement ways to inspire greater student responsibility in making the intellectual pursuit of goals and graduation the primary reason to attend Western.
· Share and encourage energetic, positive enthusiasm for Montana Western and our mission.
· Take the long and wide view in making data-informed decisions about the future of Montana Western. Continue to ask,”What is best for the students?” What is best for UMW in the long haul? Do we offer the right programs to the right students?
GOAL 7: Manage the campus for maximum efficiency, effectiveness and success.
Objectives:
· Review and utilize NSSE/FSSE data and other studies to improve campus operations and student life programs.
· Continue to support meaningful, productive evaluations of faculty and staff.
· Work with faculty, staff and administrators in shared governance.
· Assign a list of long-range task to various members of senior staff.
· Support faculty in setting high standards for teaching, service and discovery.
· Encourage faculty to assess and enrich all academic programs.
· Continue to review and analyze the administrative structure and effectiveness.
· Work with senior management, staff and faculty to maintain and improve our facilities and campus.
· Communicate with, and support the goals of, student senate.
· Continue to encourage enhanced professionalism and customer service as we conduct our business on campus, in Dillon and statewide.
· Encourage the philosophy that educating students requires the joint, coordinated work of all on campus in a collective, respectful effort of faculty, students and staff.
· Support the goals, objectives and strategic plan of the University of Montana and the MUS.
